About SALVO
SALVO is a free, browser-based naval strategy game for two: a modern take on the Salvo variant of Battleship, where both captains fire at the same time and every ship still afloat adds a shot to your salvo.
WHAT IT IS
The game.
You hide five ships on a 10 × 10 ocean. Each round, you and your rival aim at the same time, and both salvos land together: one shot for every ship you still have afloat, so the fleet that loses ships also loses firepower. Every ship has one special ability it can use once a game, the water hides loot that can add or take away a shot, and online battles move your rating on a leaderboard.
You can play the computer, challenge a friend with an invite link, or take on other captains through Quick Match and the list of open battles. It runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to download. The full rules are here.
WHO MAKES IT
The studio.
SALVO is designed and built by thehtml.studio, a studio in Cyprus. It takes the Salvo variant of Battleship, several shots a turn instead of one, and adds simultaneous fire, a special ability for every ship, hidden loot and online ratings.
UNDER THE HOOD
How it is built.
- Fair by design. The game server keeps both boards. Your browser only ever learns your own fleet, where your shots landed, and an enemy ship's position once it is sunk (or when a radar buoy points at part of it), so there is nothing hidden in the page to peek at.
- Simultaneous rounds. Both salvos are collected first and resolved together, which is also why a game can end in a draw when the last ships on both sides sink in the same round.
- 3D in the browser. The ships and the sea are rendered with WebGL (three.js); the fleet was modelled in Blender.
- No passwords. You sign in with a link or a 6-digit code sent to your email. The code and link expire after 15 minutes and work once.
- Chess-style ratings. Everyone starts at 1000, and each online battle moves your rating up or down (Elo). Games against the computer never count.
